Employee Parking Permits
UC Irvine Faculty and staff who drive vehicles to campus are required to display parking
permits. Parking permits may be purchased at the Parking and Transportation Services
Office using cash, check, Visa or MasterCard. Qualified
employees may also pay permit fees via monthly payroll deduction.
Employees on pay status are not eligible to receive parking permits or daily parking that are charged to University funds.
By paying for an employee’s parking, the department would, in essence, be providing the individual with additional compensation.
Receiving this “compensation” without reporting to the Internal Revenue Service violates Federal and State tax laws.
At this time, all Faculty/Staff permits must be purchased at the parking office.

"Commuter Plus" Upgrade
End the post-lunch search for a parking spot!
As we seek out ways to better serve the campus, we have heard from many faculty and staff with commuter
permits who state they have difficulty finding a parking spot when they return to campus from lunch, due to higher
demand for parking in the afternoon. As a result, we have introduced “Commuter Plus,” for faculty and
staff with commuter permits. Between noon and 2:30 p.m., if you cannot find a space upon returning to
campus, you can get a free upgrade permit at any of the parking structure kiosks, which will allow you
to park in a reserved stall for the rest of the day. Availability of these upgrades will be based on
the daily parking demand for each lot, and may change as we monitor their usage so as not to impact
holders of reserved permits. Certain lots may not be available with Commuter Plus.
For kiosk locations and hours, please click here.

All UC Irvine faculty, staff and students who park a vehicle

Payroll Deduction
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Persons who are eligible for payroll deduction must meet the following criteria:
- You must be in the payroll database at with an appointment of 50% or greater (no fellowships, grants, or without salary appointments)
- Your appointment must be for a minimum of three months, and the length of the permit must be for at least three months.
- The amount of the first month's deduction for your permit may be doubled if you obtain your permit after the 10th of each month.
- If you go on vacation, leave, or disability, you are still responsible for your parking fees every month until you return your permit to the parking office. Fees will continue to accumulate until your permit is returned.
- If your salary stops and you do not collect a paycheck for any reason (i.e. due to change in funding), you need to return your permit back to parking, and you are responsible for any month(s) that were not paid for through payroll deduction.
- Refunds will not be given for failure to return your parking permit for cancellation for any reason. No exceptions.
PLEASE NOTE: If and when necessary, Parking and Transportation Services will collect unpaid fees through future payroll deductions
or through private collection agency.
New Hire
If you wish to have your permit paid for via payroll deduction, please bring a letter written by your supervisor or payroll coordinator
that states your length of employment and percent time of employment. This way the Parking and Transportation Services staff can verify payroll deduction eligibility
(a length of employment of at least 3 months and at least 50% time) if you are not yet showing in the payroll database.
Otherwise, you may purchase a permit via cash, MasterCard or Visa, or check WITHOUT an employee I.D. number, although one is preferred. If
you have an employee I.D. number, please bring it with you when you purchase your permit.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. I work 20 or more hours but my department didn't/won't enter me into the payroll system as 50% or more can I still have my permit taken out on payroll deduction?
NO. Even though that may be the case, the payroll deduction system can not deduct employee's that are below 50%.
2. I'm on a post-doc or on a fellowship can I qualify for payroll deduction?
NO. Most post-doc and fellowships are paid through outside funding and not from university funds. We can not payroll deduct outside funding sources.
3. I was on medical leave/sabbatical for the past few months and I didn't know I had to return my permit; can I now get a refund?
NO. If you leave the University for any reason it is your responsibility to return your parking permit to the parking office. As long as you have the permit in your possession you are required to pay for it. We have no way of knowing if an employee is on leave until we can't deduct you.
When a person has an active permit on payroll deduction and the amount is not applied to a paycheck the amount accumulates in a suspended account until another paycheck is issued. The total amount outstanding will then be taken on your next paycheck.
4. I am leaving the university, is my permit automatically cancelled when I leave?
NO. Your permit is not cancelled until it has been returned to the parking office and a cancellation form is signed.
5. I came in on the 12th of the month do I have to pay for the whole month?
Yes. Your permit is prorated on a daily, weekly, or monthly rate, whichever is more economical. If you purchase a permit in the middle of the month and there are two or more weeks left in the month the monthly rate will apply. After the 10th of the month a new payroll cycle begins so you won't be charged until the following month. (i.e. you come in on the 12th of March the payroll deduction cycle has closed for the April 1 pay date; you will see a double deduction on your May 1 paycheck.
6. Do I pay for my parking in advance?
NO. Payroll deduction is done in arrears which means on your paycheck you are paying for the month you previously parked.
7. I don't have my employee ID number yet can I still sign up for payroll deduction?
Yes. We just need to be able to verify your employee status; please bring a letter from your department with the length and percentage of your appointment, or the name and phone number of your supervisor or payroll/personnel so we can call to verify your employment.
8. I'm a graduate student and I work as a Teaching/ Research Assistant can I qualify for payroll deduction?
Yes. As long as you are in the payroll system as 50% or more and are not working without salary or on a fellowship.
9. I'm an emeriti professor can I still do payroll deduction?
No. If you are working without salary we can not payroll deduct you.
10. I'm an undergraduate student and I work on campus can I qualify for payroll deduction?
No. If you are a student you will not qualify for payroll deduction, because undergrad appointments are usually below 50%.
11. When do I need to turn my permit in so I am not charged for the following month?
The cut off date for payroll is the 10th of the month, if you return your permit to the parking office before the 10th of the month you won't be charged for parking that month.
12. What is the post/pre tax option?
The pre-tax option reduces your taxable income, which means your salary is taxed on a lower income on a monthly basis. This can save you a few dollars a month.
The Post-tax option taxes your whole income.
13. How do I choose the pre-tax option?
Pre-tax is automatic, unless you choose to opt out of it.
14. I work through Campus Temporary Services and I work full-time do I qualify for payroll deduction?
NO, Campus Temporary Service employees typically aren't in the system 50% or more so we are unable to payroll deduct them.
