Parking and Impound Regulations
Bicycle Parking
Only park and lock bicycles on bike racks
State law prohibits parking bicycles on sidewalks where they obstruct pedestrian traffic.
Bicycles may not be parked in buildings, except for assigned residence hall rooms or assigned, departmentally-approved workplaces such as offices or labs.
Illegally parked bicycles may be impounded or cited and their owners subject to fines and any required storage or licensing fees.
Fees/Fines
To get a bicycle from the impound, fees will be applied to obtain it back. If one does not claim their bicycle within 90 days from impound date, it will be auctioned off.
Bicycle Impounding Overview
Bikes are subject to confiscation and impoundment if they are found to be parked illegally. (Not at a bike rack)
What
is considered an abandoned bike?
Abandoned bicycles are usually inoperable, rusted, and/or
have missing parts. Typically, these bicycles were once
used for transportation about the campus, but were left
behind when their owners left the campus. These are the
bikes we want to identify and remove. Our policy is to
notify the owner as best we can to prevent wrongful confiscation.
What
happens to abandoned bikes?
To determine whether a bike has truly been abandoned,
we tag it with a notice that requests the owner to immediately
move the bicycle. The tagged bicycle is left in the same
spot for 72 hours. At the end of this period the tagged
bicycle is placed into storage for 90 days (impounded), allowing ample
time for the rightful owner to reclaim her/his property.
Unclaimed bikes are donated to Helping Hands of ASUCI
(UCI's Student Association) or sold to the UCI Community.
How do people reclaim a confiscated bicycle?
Call Parking Field Services at (949) 824-2691 with a description of the bicycle and
our staff will check the database. If your bicycle has been confiscated, you will need to make
an appointment to pick up. You must bring a photo ID, proof of ownership, and a $10 processing fee.
What
should people do if they suspect their bicycle has been
stolen?
Call the UCI Police Department and file a report. (949)
